ONE YEAR GME COURSE

One of CSL's most rewarding contributions is its Marine Engineering Training Institute (METI), located in the Shipyard premises.

METI is under ISO 9001 Management System Standard from DNV (Det Norske Veritas) for Quality Assurance, ISO 14001 for Environmental Management System, OHSAS 18001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management System as part of CSL Management System Standard. The International Maritime Organization and the DG Shipping Government of India approve its standards. METI has to date turned out more than two thousand six hundred competent marine engineers; working in different shipping companies around the world.

The GME course, approved by Director General of Shipping, Govt. of India, is open to Indian National Graduate Engineers in Mechanical / Mechanical & Automation / Naval Architecture only from institutions approved by All India Council of Technical Education or UGC. Maximum age limit is 28 years at the start of course. Minimum qualifying marks are 50% marks in final year of Engineering graduation,and also 50% marks in English either in 10th standard or 12th standard; and medically fit.

Every year there will be two batches - one batch commences on 1st of January and the second batch commences on 1st of August. The duration of the course is 12 months, and the course is fully residential.

JOINING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ONE YEAR GME COURSE AND FORMS

Successful completion of this course is the mandatory training requirement obtaining all documents including Part A of Class IV Certificate of Competency, required for joining a Merchant Ship (Indian or Foreign) as Junior Marine Engineer Officer as per STCW as amended.

ADMISSION - SPONSORED CANDIDATES

The sanctioned capacity of the training institute is 140 per annum. The January batch will have an intake of 108 graduates and the August batch will have 32. Candidates Sponsored by Shipping Companies or their agents will be admitted. For getting sponsorship, candidates have to get selected by a Shipping Company. The candidates have to directly approach the Shipping Companies and go through their selection procedure and get selected by them; Sponsoring companies submit the list of selected candidates to METI and their admission starts on 15th November for January Batch and 1st July for August Batch. Sponsorship is the guarantee by a shipping company, for the sea service after the 12 months GME training.

Provisional Degree Certificate from University is required at the time of admission.

As per the DG Shipping Training Circular No. 30 of 2018 dated 24.10.2018, candidates sponsored by a shipping company only will be eligible for admission now. A sponsorship letter guaranteeing sea service after 12 months of the GME training from a shipping company is necessary along with the 3 page application form for admission to the next GME batch.
As per the latest DG Shipping Training Circular No. 08 of 2019 dated 30.04.2019, candidates who want to apply for any pre-sea courses have to register in the DG Shipping website and get a Reference Number valid for three months only, before admission. Candidates have to fill up the 3 page application form available in the Joining Instructions mentioning the Reference number from DG Shipping, and send it by post along with copy of sponsorship letter (no other attachments) to The Head of Department, Marine Engineering Training Institute, Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi - 682 015, from 1st September to 15th November for January Batch and 1st May to 1st July for August Batch. The candidates when called for admission by e mail will have to report for admission at the Marine Engineering Training Institute (METI), Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), with the above Reference number from DG Shipping and all other original documents as per our checklist at joining instructions and DGS instructions, at the appointed date and time.

They have to first apply for the INDoS Number from DG Shipping online at the time of admission in METI by paying the fees of Rs. 1,416/- to DG Shipping and with this INDoS Number only, the admission process will start.

The Total fees for the course is Rs.3,80,000/- at present, including boarding & lodging. Candidates have to pay the total amount of Rs.3,80,000/- at the time of admission. For female candidates the total fees is Rs.2,90,000/-
